S4. Sandy Gleyed Matrix

For use in all LRRs, except for W, X, and Y.

A gleyed matrix that occupies 60 percent or more of a layer starting at a depth of 15 cm (6 inches) or less from the soil surface.

User Notes: Gley colors are not synonymous with gray colors (fig. 22). They are the colors on the gley color pages in the “Munsell Soil Color Book” (X-Rite, 2009) that have hue of N, 10Y, 5GY, 10GY, 5G, 10G, 5BG, 10BG, 5B, 10B, or 5PB and value of greater than or equal to 4. For this indicator, the gleyed matrix only has to be present at a depth of 15 cm (6 inches) or less from the surface; there is no thickness requirement for the layer.
